Save the Highland Chieftain train campaign

Highland Chieftain train between Inverness and London

We just received this important message from Ian of Auchendean Lodge, Dulnain Bridge:

“Hello everybody.

I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed:

“Save the Highland Chieftain”

This speedy comfortable once daily through train service, from London stopping at Peterborough, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh , later stops at Aviemore before concluding in Inverness. It’s a lifeline for tourists and ourselves.

There is a proposal to axe it and make everyone change at Edinburgh. It is a truly retrograde step and I believe that many long distance travellers will cease to use the train and revert to environmentally unfriendly airplanes or cars – or just not visit the highlands.

For years I have promoted this service as “One of the great journeys of the world”. It’s on a par with New Zealand’s interisland ferry journey from Wellinton to Picton. From the seat you can see castles (Stirling and Edinburgh), cathedrals (Durham, York and Peterborough), Newcastle’s bridges and Angel of the North, the beautiful Northumberland coast and ultimately the highlands. Absolutely STUNNING.

The full story is on Inverness Courier

I really think this is an important cause, and I’d like to encourage you to add your signature, too. It’s free and takes just a few seconds of your time. But please do it NOW – the petition closes this Thursday 30 September.”

We just signed the petition and hope you will too.
