Tomintoul at 1150 feet is the highest village in the Highlands. It was created by the 4th Duke of Gordon. The first building in the village was the inn erected by Janet Mackenzie in 1777. Janet was the mother of no fewere than 24 children.

In 1858 the inn had given way to a "modern mansion known as the Duke of Richmon's Hotel.

In 1860 Queen Victoria described Tomintoul as "the most tumble-down poor-looking place I ever saw"

Surely some Tomintoul resident would like to respond (albeit belatedly)
