According to tradition a monastery was founded on the site c566 by St. Moluag of Bangor. It is also recorded that Malcolm II extended the church and created Mortlach an episopal see. The design of the present church suggests 13th century. A north wing was added in 1826 and further extended in 1876. The building was completely restored in 1931 (vestry was added). There is a Pictish monolith standing in the graveyard
