The diocese of Moray was established in 1107 and the first Catholic parish church was built at Inveravon between 1108 and 1114, although the land around the church was not gifted to the Bishop of Moray by Malcolm (or Maol Choluim), Earl of Fife, until 1206.

The history of the parish through the next 900 years reflects the ups and downs of the established church in Scotland, the church being rebuilt on a couple of occasions.

The spelling of the parish includes Inveravon, Inveraven, Invera'an, Inverawin, Inverhoven, Strathowen, Inverain, Inverouen, Inverhouen and probably more – the common link being the importance of St Peter's well and the Kirk at the heart of the parish
