HISTORY
William the Lion is believed to have granted Cullen its burghal charter in the early 13th century but the old town, sited near the parish church, was never a success and in 1822 was replaced by a new burgh nearer the sea. the focal point of the new town is the square designed by William Robertson in 1822-23. The Clydesdale Bank dates from 1867 and the Bank of Scotland in grant Street from a decade earlier. The 17th century Mercat Cross was originally sited near the praish church but was moved to its current location c 1830. It incorporates a sculpted panel of the Virgin and Child from Old Cullen
