HISTORY
A settlement of great antiquity and a Pictish site of considerable importance. The present village was laid out c 1805. Was connected by rail to the main line at Alves in 1861. In 1864 a large manure factory was erected, the chimneys of which visible for many miles around.
The B.B.C. transmitting station with its 500 foot high mast was built in 1936. From 1966 onwards the east side of the village has been dominated by the Maltings (over 100 feet high) which have provided Burghead with employment in a thriving industry. Chivas have recently announced their intentions to build a new distillery at Burghead close to the Maltings.
