Events in July 2017

With the summer holidays almost upon us, here are some ideas of the family-friendly events taking place in the Greater Speyside area in July.

Gordon Castle Walled Garden events, 1st, 9th and 13th July

Gordon Castle Walled Garden is celebrating its third year in business with a Birthday and Open Weekend on 1st July, from 12-11pm.  The celebrations on Saturday 1st include live music, free entry to the garden and children’s play area, hog roast, BBQ, gin and cider, plus a cocktail and food pairing evening (to book a table call 01343 612317).  The garden and play park are also free to enter on the Sunday 2nd.

There are two open air performances by Heartbreak Productions in July – Murder on the Terrace, an entertaining ‘whodunit’ suitable for 12+ on July 9th from 7-10pm, and the production of David Walliams’ Billionarie Boy on July 13th, suitable for 7+.

Outdoor Theatre at Logie Steading, 4th and 20th July

Summer is the season for outdoor theatre!  At Logie Steading you can enjoy a production by Illyria of The Emperor’s New Clothes on 4th July, which is recommended for children aged 5+ and their families. 

On 20th July you can watch Illyria in action again in a performance of Shakespeare’s A Comedy of Errors where two sets of identical twins who were separated at birth end up unknowingly in the same city.  Also recommended for ages 5+.

Seafest Family Food Fayre and Fun Day, 8th July

Lossiemouth Seafest is a week-long programme of events including a sandcastle competition, afternoon tea party, sporting activities and a children’s fancy dress summer party.  The event ends with the Seafest Family Food Fayre and Fun Day on 8th July at Station Park, Lossiemouth.  This is a free event with a children’s fancy dress parade, food stalls, cookery demonstrations, funfair rides bouncy castles, and more!

Forres Highland Games, 8th July

The Forres Highland Games will be held on 8th July from 12.30 – 5pm, with traditional heavy events, track and field, tug o’war, massed pipe bands, solo piping, entertainment, stalls and a 10k road race.

Family Fun Day, Eight Acres Hotel, 8th July

The annual Family Fun Day at Eight Acres Hotel in Elgin has bouncy castles, entertainment, music, games and a BBQ.  Entry is free.

Otter & Osprey Guided Walk, WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre, 14th July

Look out for otters and osprey at the Otter and Osprey Guided Walk on 14th July, 7-9pm, in Spey Bay.  Tickets cost £3 per person and must be purchased in advance (under 16s are free).  Call 01343 820339 or visit the WDC Scottish Centre shop to purchase.

Elgin Musuem Family Drop-In Activities, 17th, 24th and 31st July

There are three family drop-in activities at Elgin Museum in July:
  • The Vikings on Monday 17th July 2017, 11am – 1pm (make your own runic pendant)
  • The Picts on Monday 24th July 2017, 11am – 1pm (design your own Pictish symbol)
  • The Romans on Monday 31st July 2017, 11am – 1pm (make your own Roman mosaic)

These are free activities and no booking is required.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Summer Garden Party at Ballindalloch Walled Garden, 22nd July

A chance to enjoy an old fashioned garden party in the Ballindalloch Castle walled rose garden, from 1-4pm on 22nd July.  Tickets cost £25 and must be booked in advance.  Prosecco on arrival, Lossiemouth Military Wives choir, Fiona Kyle on Clarsach, raffle, auction, light refreshments and more.

Speyfest, July 28th – 30th

Speyfest is an annual Celtic music festival in a tented village in Fochabers – three days of traditional and contemporary Celtic music.  Ceilidhs and concerts, a craft and food fair with tastings, a young person music workshops, and a music marathon on Speyfest Sunday.
